I love old adages, you know the ones you heard growing up.

“A penny saved is a penny earned.”

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

“Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, & wise.

Here is one every elementary school kid learned in the school yard:

“Winners never cheat and cheaters never win”.

Based on the disappointing baseball news of the day, we can call that out-dated adage, strike three.  It is a sad day when the sports page is full of winners who cheated so they could drink a little champagne in the locker room.

We’re not talking about sandlot baseball.  Professional sports are big business, as witnessed by the incredible salaries of the athletes.  Winning has taken precedence over everything else.  So if one team can gain an advantage over another by stealing signs or a NASCAR driver can spin out a competitors car to give an advantage to his team mate, so be it.  I guess that’s what has become big league sports.

We were happy for the Astros when then won the World Series in 2017 and we were cheering for them in 2019.  Well, don’t we feel duped, here we were cheering for a bunch of cheaters.

I’ve always been intrigued when the baseball or softball players talk behind their mitts, shielding their mouths in case someone can read lips,  but that is small scale compared to the electronic devices being used in todays games.

On the news the other night one of the sport announcers said signals from the catcher to the pitcher were read by the opposing team and then relayed to the batter by banging on a trash can in the dugout.  If it wasn’t so sad it would be funny.  High tech and low tech working together to cheat.

I’m disappointed.

You are so right. Sad to say but the “anything you can get away with mentality is so pervasive in our society now”.

I always felt this way about cat Burglars and other high class thieves. Imagine what they could do if they put that same creativity and effort into getting a job!
